The Five Elements

The red envelope was devised based on the idea of the red envelope in Asian culture.
There are two main colors used in the design are red and yellow. The red and yellow colors are very common colors applied in the lunar new year because of the traditional beliefs of the luckiness it brings. In theory, there are five main elements in nature which are fire, water, wood, metal, and earth. To develop consistency in the design, I choose to visualize the five elements by using line-pattern. I have taken the main characteristics of the elements to create each different line pattern, for example, water represents softness, metal represents toughness, wood represents growth. The reason behind the Five element project is to personalize the way people give red-envelope in the lunar new year. The water envelope will be given to people who have been born in the year of water. By personalizing the way of giving red envelop, I believe that it will become a more meaningful gift the lunar new year.
For the water envelope, the Chinese word should represent ‘water’ but I replace it with the word means ‘beginning’; to give
a mark to the beginning of the collection.
Patterns are used in the design - water, wood, metal, fire, and earth.
